How to speed up the site with page cache and when to reset it

← Back

The /pagecache section: the “Cache this site's pages” checkbox serves ready-made pages to guests; “Reset cache” — if visitors see an old version.

  1. Open the “Page cache” item in the “Admin” menu (address /pagecache) — the section is available to the administrator only.
  2. Check “Cache this site's pages” and click “Save”.
  3. If some sections must always be rebuilt, enter their addresses in “Do not cache sections” — one per line. Subsections fall under the rule automatically. It's easier to disable an individual section with the “Do not cache” checkbox in its settings window.
  4. When visitors see an old page, click “Reset cache”.

The cache stores a ready-made page and serves it to guests instantly, without querying the database. You won't see its effect: a logged-in user and the administrator always get a fresh build. Check speed in an incognito window, and not on the first page — a visitor's first visit is always built anew.

Usually you don't need to reset manually: the cache resets itself after any save in the admin panel. The “Safety page lifetime” is needed for cases when content changed bypassing the admin panel. Personal accounts, login, registration, and the admin panel are never cached.

If it didn't work

  • Guests see the old version, and you see the new one. Click “Reset cache”. If it repeats — reduce the safety lifetime or add the section to the exclusions.
  • Guests see a page with data that should change on the fly. Set the section to “Do not cache”.
  • The /pagecache address returns 404. The module opens only at its section's address, and the “Page cache” section has been deleted from the site. Create a section with the address /pagecache and the module pagecache, access — “Administrators only”.
  • A warning at the top says “Cache is disabled across the entire installation…”. It has been turned off on the server; the page settings have no effect for now.
